Adams A 345. Sparrow 3. Honeyman 25. Horblit 2a, Norman 19, Hoover 14, PMM 79 (c.f). - FIRST EDITION OF THE "FIRST HANDBOOK OF MODERN SYSTEMATIC MINERALOGY," De natura fossilium, the third of five treatises in the present work (Horblit). Also included here are the first published work on physical geology (De ortu & causis subterraneorum), a treatise on subterranean waters and gases (De natura eorum quae effluunt ex terra), a survey of classical references to metals and mines (De veteribus & novis metallis), and a new edition of Agricola's first scientific publication (Bermannus); all but Bermannus are printed for the first time. "Agricola's most important work, & after De re metallica itself, was De natura fossilium" (Hoover). In this work, "Agricola parted from the general view of Aristotle that stones, metals, and gems had their origin in the influence of heavenly bodies. & Instead he looked to natural causes, to the solution of minerals in liquids and their precipitation by gravity, heat, cold, and evaporation" (Dibner Agricola, p.18). De natura fossilium introduced Agricola's system of classifying minerals according to their physical properties and described eighty minerals and metallic ores (including twenty previously unrecorded).
