"In 1846 Bernard began studying the pancreatic juices and their role in digestion ... By observing the processes of digestion in dogs and rabbits, and by experimentation with pure pancreatic juices collected from temporary pancreatic fistulae, Bernard was able to show that pancreatic juices made fats absorbable by breaking them down into fatty acids and glycerine" (Grolier Medicine). The present work represents the final and most complete statement of Bernard's discoveries concerning the pancreas. It was published in Volume I of the supplement to Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des seances de l'Academie des Sciences, and also in a small separate issue. The journal volume also contains "Mémoire sur quelques points de la physiologie des algues" by A. Derbès u. A. J. J. Solier with 23 tinted tables as well as "Mémoire sur le calcul des pertubations qu'éprouvent les cometes" by Hansen.
