PMM 223(b); Sparrow 38; Norman 481 - FIRST EDITION of this work laying the foundation of the modern science of acoustics. Chladni 'introduced the practice of clamping discs and squares of glass, metal or wood at the center, applying fine sand to the top surface and drawing a bow over the plate's edge. As the plate vibrated, the sand shifted into vibration patterns that showed the nodal lines. These later prompted Napoleon to remark that "Chladni has made sound visible"' (Dibner). Chladni's first results were reported in 'New Discoveries in the Theory of Sound,' 1787 and were greatly enlarged in 'Acoustics' 1802.
