Wood, p. 257; Engelmann, p. 369; BMC Nat. Hist., I, 237 (all for first edition). Second edition. In 1749 Brisson was engaged by Réaumur to care for his collection of natural history and to help him in his observations and experiments, thus putting him in the line of fire of the great rivalry between Réaumur and Buffon. Buffon in his Histoire Naturelle had attempted a general description of the animal world and Réaumur desired to undertake a similar enterprise in which Brisson was to play the principal role. In 1756 Brisson published the present work in which he announced the project and dealt with the study of the first two classes - quadrupeds and cetaceans. But in 1757 upon Réaumur's death he had to give up the care of the collection which was transferred to the Cabinet du Roi under the supervision of Buffon, and to which he was denied access.
