The first illustrated edition in Spanish of Cervantes' Don Quixote

Bruselas: Jan Mommarte, 1662. Two parts in two volumes. 8vo (177 x 110 mm). [28], 611, [5]; [16], 649, [7] pp., including engraved additional title and 8 engraved plates to each part, pp. 528-76 mispaginated 525-72 in part II. Contemporary full calf, spine with 5 raised bands, gold-tooled and -titled in compartments, board edges tooled with floral gilt roll (binding a bit tight, spine somewhat rubbed and crannied), red-dyed edges. Plate to fol. 361, part II reattached and frayed edges repaired, small tear to blank lower margin of Pp2 part II, small burnhole on Ll6 of part II affecting a few letters recto and verso. Text only little browned and virtually unspotted, occasional faint dampstaining to margins. The plates clean and in fine impressions. Provenance: Castle of Rosendael, Netherlands. An outstanding copy in excellent condition and with ample margins, one of the finest we have seen so far. Complete with 16 engraved plates and the two additional titles. ----

Rius I, 20; Palau 51993; Peeters-Fontainas 229 - Extremely rare and important edition of the masterpiece of the Spanish literature, the first illustrated edition in Spanish and the first with the new title Vida y hechos. The text follows the edition of 1637 for the first part and those of Madrid 1615 and Valencia 1616 for the second. The 16 engravings are by Frederik Bouttats, some after the Dordrecht 1657 edition in Dutch.
Primera edicion en que se cambio el primitivo título de la edicion príncipe por el de: "Vida y Hechos del Ingenioso Hidalgo...", generalizado en ediciones posteriores, y primera, impresa en lengua española, que contiene estampas, copias de la holandesa de 1657, dibujadas por Savry y grabadas por Bouttats. Es una de las dos primeras ediciones con ilustracion completa..."
Tres rare premiere edition illustree en espagnol (une edition ill. en neerlandais etait deja parue a Dordrecht en 1657) : l'illustration gravee sur cuivre, non signee mais par F. Bouttats s'inspire de celle de l'edit. de Dordrecht et se compose de 2 frontisp. et de 16 (8, 8) figures hors texte (l'edit. hollandaise en comptait 24 par Savery). Rius signale erronement 2 frontisp. et 32 pl. (cf. Peeters-Fontainas et d'autres ex. dans des collections publiques). Cette impression bruxelloise, innovante par son titre general "Vida y hechos" qui se generalisera ensuite se base sur l'edit. de Madrid 1637 pour la 1ere partie et sur celles de Madrid 1615 et Valence 1616 pour la 2e.
"The complete edition has 2 frontispieces and 16 chapter illustrations newly engraved by unknown engraver after Savery's 24 illustrations (Dordrecht: Savery 1657). 8 illustrations from Savery's set have not been copied: "Andrés' lashes", "The galley slaves", "DQ's penance", "DQ hanged at the inn", "The enchanted Dulcinea", "Braying mayors squadron", "Washing beards episode" and "Sancho's judgement". Cushing's copy has only the 1 frontis and 8 chapter illustration from vol. I Río y Rico refers to two illustrations ("Don Quixote knighted" and "Doña Rodríguez' night adventure") as if they appeared in this edition, but they don't."
