Title page with large woodcut illustration showing sick person surrounded by physician and nurses, one full-page anatomical woodcut, three woodcut illustrations within text showing a sick person, a gardener and an alembic, and further 25 woodcut illustrations of plants, small woodcut initials. Brown stain to lower corner of first 15 leaves probablyy from lamp oil, burn damage to 3 leaves with holes up to 5 cm in diameter and loss of text, little browning, spotting and soiling throughout.
Two works bound in one volume. 8vo (192 x 142 mm). Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, boards with blind stamped floral decoration and medaillons showing portraits of humanists, spine with 3 raised bands, upper board with two brass catches (clasps and bands gone), spine ends defective, leather at extremities chipped, boards rubbed. Provenance: illegible signatures to front pastedown and first title-page. ----

Walter Hermann Ryff (ca. 1500-1548), a German physician is renowned for his publications on pharmaceutical medicine. He is remembered as one of the most important 16th century agents in the spread of scientific knowledge throughout the German-speaking countries. He wrote numerous books on pharmacy, surgery, anatomy, obstetrics and architecture, and in doing so incurred the wrath of contemporaries such as Conrad Gesner and Leonhard Fuchs by freely plagiarising the works of others.
