Two volumes. 12mo (161 x 95 mm). [4], 284; [4], 291 [1] pp., including engraved frontispiece of Cervantes in volume I, publisher's advert leaf before title in vol. II, woodcut ornaments and capitals. Contemporary full calf, spine with 5 raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt (leather somewhat dry, hinges partially cracked but cords holding firm, boards and extremities rubbed, corners bumped and worn, spine leather cracky). Provenance: Richard Corbet and Henry Corbet (bookplates to front pastedowns). Text with light age-toning and occasional very minor spotting, otherwise quite clean and fresh. Vol. I with single short wormhole to blank margin of first and final leaves. All in all a fine untouched copy printed on strong paper. ----

Palau 53935. SECOND ENGLISH EDITION of Cervantes romance and as rare as the first English edition published in 1619 just two years after the first Spanish. Although it is printed on the title-page that the version was made directly from the original, it has been proven that the anonymous translator actually used the French translation by Madame Richebourg published in 1738 (see Palau).
