1888-1923, volume 178 to 211, bound in 33 (of 34) volumes, lacking vol. 182 (1891) only. Series B present only, containing papers of a biological character. 4to (275 x 215 mm). Contemporary calf or half calf, leather generally dry and rubbed, few volumes with detached boards. Internally generally clean with little age-toning and occassional, mainly marginal, spotting. First and final leaves (including endpapers) generally foxed, several plates foxed mainly in margins. Provenance: Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (library stamps to titles, some pages and plates). A very good set internally. ----
FIRST EDITIONS. The Philosophical Transactions, the official journal of the Royal Society of London was established in 1665 making it the first journal in the world exclusively devoted to science, and therefore also the world's longest-running scientific journal. In the first years of its existence it was edited and published by the Royal Society's first secretary, Henry Oldenburg.
