VERY RARE. Geminiano Montanari (1633-1687), born in Modena, was one of the most prominent natural philosophers in Italy of the late 17th century. He became professor of mathematics at Bologna university in 1664 and professor of astronomy and meteorology at Padua university in 1679. He was a very good practical astronomer. Especially his cometary observations were unusually accurate for his time. Even Newton made frequent use of them, illustrating his method of determining planetary orbits in the Principia. His observations of the great comet of 1680 are mentioned twice in the third volume. Montanari also observed the great comets of 1664, 1665, 1681, and 1682. - Visit our website for additional images and information.
