Alston III. 217. - EXCEPTIONALLY RARE FIRST EDITION. Contains essays on a wide range of subjects including cookery, diet, angling, fowling, science, geography, etc. The Universal Library: or, Compleat Summary of the Sciences, first appearing in print in 1712, is one of the first encyclopedia. The book, authored by Henry Curzon, carried the goal of imparting 'universal knowledge' to ladies and gentlemen and 'Endued with Learning and Gentlemen-like qualities for their advancement or conversation' in young boys. "The two-volume, non-alphabetized compendium of treatises covering an array of subjects from theology, philosophy, and ethics to physic, chirurgery, and chemistry, states that 'within the Structure of this Work, like Homer's Iliads in a Nutshell, have you Enclosed the Learning, Arts, and Artifices of the Microcosm ... like the World Mapp'd down in one Sheet of Paper, you have demonstrated together at one View, all Humane, Sciential, Natural and Artificial Rarities.' Curzon's preface thus walks the expected line between comprehensiveness and conciseness long associated with a variety of reference texts while also invoking the specifically epic provenance supposedly appropriate to works of 'universal' scope." (S. Rudy, Literature and Encyclopedism in Enlightenment Britain: The Pursuit of Complete Knowledge, Spinger, 2014).
