Tomash & Williams L27 (this copy); D.S.B. XV, pp. 367-376; S. Stigler, History of Statistics, pp. 146-148. SECOND EDITION (first edition published the same year). "This work is one of Laplace's contributions to statistics and the theory of probability. This is, as the title indicates, a philosophical examination of the subject rather than a rigorous mathematical presentation as in his other, more famous work (see Laplace, Théorie analytique des probabilitiés, 1812). This Essai grew out of a lecture he had given at the École Normale in 1812 - the same year that he published his Théorie analytique. It was used, essentially unchanged, as the introduction to the second and third editions of Théorie analytique (see Laplace, Théorie analytique, 1820) He indicates that he was initially led to the study of problems in celestial mechanics by his early work in probability." (Tomash & Williams L27).
