Lalande 551; Riccardi II, 638. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION, variant including the 4 preliminary pages with dedication to Carlo conte di Firmian. This treatise describes the extremely careful observations of the summer solstice of 1775 made by Ximenes, Bernouilli, Fontana and Slop on the gnomon of Santa Maria del Fiore to verify the value obtained for the obliquity of the ecliptic. Its result of -35'' for the secular decrease in the ecliptic obliquity was retained by Lalande and is close to the modern value. See also: J. L.
