8vo (220 x 161 mm). 404, [28] pp. Roman type, 44 lines plus headline. Signatures: A-Cc8 Dd6. Title within woodcut border, woodcut portrait of the author on verso of title, woodcut initials, woodcut illustrations (with additional bifolium signed S and bound after S6 containing full-page woodcuts printed on one side only), a folding woodcut plate signed X and bound before gathering X. Bound in 20th century sprinkled half sheep over marbled boards, red-sprinkled edges, marbled endpapers (slight rubbing of extremities). Light even browning of text, minor spotting and weak marginal dampstaining in places (stronger to final gathering), title trimmed close but without touching woodcut border. Provenance: erased ownership signature at foot of title. A very good copy, collated and complete. ----
A reprint of Bartoli's influential 1550 translation, in a smaller format and with a new dedication to Cosimo de' Medici, indicating that copies of the earlier edition are no longer available. The woodcut illustrations here are slightly reduced copies of the 1550 blocks. Bartoli was living in Venice at this time, working on behalf of Cosimo de' Medici.
