4to (230 x 180 mm). [32], 520 pp., woodcut device to title-page, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, 15 folding engraved plates bound at the end. Contemporary mottled half calf, spine with 5 raised bands and some gilt ruling, gilt-lettered morocco label in second compartment, original endpapers (paper over boards heavily scratched and chipped at edges, corners worn and bumped, small worm holes at head and foot of spine). All pages and plates uncut. Text and plates with uneven browning and scattered pale spotting, light water staining to lower blank margin throughout; the title page with repair of torn portion at lower corner (costing a few mm of fillet at right above imprint) and a small hole within title (affecting the letter "E" of "EX"), a few smaller ink spots. Still very good, unsophisticated copy. ----

FIRST EDITION OF EULER'S SECOND WORK ON MECHANICS, VERY RARE IN INTERNATIONAL TRADE. "The 'Theoria motus corporum solidorum', published almost thirty years later, is related to the 'Mechanica'. In the introduction to this work, Euler gave a new exposition of punctual mechanics and followed Maclaurin's example (1742) in projecting the forces onto the axes of a fixed orthogonal rectilinear system. Establishing that the instantaneous motion of a solid body might be regarded as composed of rectilinear translation and instant rotation, Euler devoted special attention to the study of rotary motion" (DSB).
